Ingredients

10 dried chili de arbol peppers

2 medium-sized ripe tomatoes

1 medium onion, chopped

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

1/2 teaspoon cumin

Fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Chiles: Remove the stems and seeds from the chili de arbol peppers. If you prefer a milder salsa, be sure to remove the seeds as they carry most of the heat.

Toast the Chiles: In a skillet over medium heat, add the dried chili de arbol peppers. Toast them for about 2-3 minutes, shaking the pan constantly to avoid burning the peppers. The peppers should become fragrant and slightly darker in color.

Blend the Base: In a blender or food processor, combine the toasted chiles, tomatoes, chopped onion, minced garlic, olive oil, salt, lime juice, and cumin. Blend on high until you have a smooth consistency.

Taste and Adjust: Taste your salsa and adjust the seasoning if necessary by adding more salt or lime juice as needed.

Chill: Transfer your salsa to a serving bowl and let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Garnish & Serve: Before serving, give it a good stir. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired, and serve with tortilla chips, tacos, or as a topping for grilled meats.
